Frequently Asked Questions

ARE HEALTHY SKIN LAB PRODUCTS NATURAL OR CERTIFIED ORGANIC?

Dr Sharad is a world-leading skin expert, skin cancer academic and university professor. His research-based lab is committed to being science driven and stems from the philosophy that "one cannot have bad health and good skin". While we use naturally derived ingredients, the focus is on good health and great skin and not labelling. Many "natural: ingredients can also be harmful, and our focus is on skin health using the highest quality and peer-reviewed ingredients.

ARE YOUR PRODUCTS FREE OF PARABENS AND SULFATES?

With our research-based focus on skin health and good health, our products do not contain

parabens and sulfates.

ARE YOUR PRODUCTS SAFE TO USE IF I HAVE ALLERGIES OR SENSITIVE SKIN?

We have many clients with sensitive skin who have been successfully able to use our products, and there is no ingredient in our products which can worsen skin health. Having said that, anything applied to your skin has the potential to cause irritation - even water has been known to cause a skin allergy for some people! This is why dermatologists usually recommend patch testing a product i.e., applying on the inner arm first on people with sensitive skin.

The cleanser, Purify, contains sweet almond oil. Technically almond is a tree nut (an not a ground nut / legume like a peanut) an should not cause allergies but as mentioned above patch testing is advisable for anyone with any form of allergy.

WHY DOES THE PRODUCT NOT HAVE AN OUTER CARTON ?

We have removed the outer packaging to make our packaging (and therefore our product size on the shelf and for shipping) smaller and therefore leave less of an environmental footprint. We as a company have a sustainability focus that includes reduction in packaging materials, shifting plastic to glass (when possible) and using sustainable ingredients.

ARE YOUR PRODUCTS VEGAN ?

While our ingredients are almost entirely naturally derived, and are vegan, our focus is on good health for humans and animals and not labels. We are entirely cruelty-free, with no animal testing and our sunscreens are non-chemical based and therefore coral reef friendly.

CAN I USE YOUR PRODUCT IF I AM PREGNANT OR BREAST FEEDING ?

Absolutely. Our products(excluding res-v-retinol) are formulated without harmful and aggressive irritants and are gentle enough to use every day, and safe to used during pregnancy and breast feeding.

WHAT IS THE SHELF LIFE OF MY PRODUCT?

In general, all skincare products need to be used by a certain period, and in our case, it is 2 years.  Our sunscreens have an expiry date listed because they are considered OTC medications in America ( and manufactured in our FDA-licensed facility).

IS DR SHARAD A DERMATOLOGIST?

Dr Sharad is a skin cancer doctor, author, an international authority on sunscreens and a leading researcher into skin aging and skin lines (including wrinkles). As Sun damage is the most common cause of aging, and ultraviolet rays from the sun can also cause skin cancer, his research interests led to the development of skin care and sunscreens via his research lab.  He also has an interest into the genetics of skin and a view that "one cannot have bad health and good skin". His best selling book, The Genetic of Health (Simon and Schuster) is available internationally and translated into several languages. Dr Sharad is also widely published and has over 100 research articles and several skin text books. He is active as an educator or doctors and dermatologists. Good health is the ethos behind Health Skin Lab - products that come out of his research lab. Further, all our products have been independently testing in dermatologist clinics in America.

WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT THIS VITAMIN C SERUM?

Brighten from Health Skin Lab contains L-ascorbic acid, the most active and potent form of Vitamin C that has been shown to penetrate skin cells. Other forms of vitamin C such as sodium ascorbyl phosphate need converting to actives to be effective, where as L-ascorbic acid is bioavailable and therefore the best at reducing pigmentation or effects of sun damage and aging. This is like the difference between retinol in cosmetics and medical-grade retinoic acid.

IS YOUR VITAMIN C SERUM SUITABLE FOR SENSITIVE SKIN?

Brighten from Healthy Skin Lab contains L-ascorbic acid alongside ferulic acid, hyaluronic acid and vitamin E.  These other ingredients hydrate skin and also stabilize the vitamin C causing less potential for skin reactions. However, some people do develop redness with Vitamin C concentrations over 10% (Brighten has 15%) and more rarely people can be allergic to vitamin C serums. We recommend that you test on your inner arm for a few day to make sure your skin does not react before beginning daily use.
